Classic Literature

Wuthering Height, Bleak House, Great Expectation, David Copperfield...

What lessons given from those readings?

1. Sufferings COULD bring out the best in persons, if they don't stay in bitterness, like the character in Charles Dickens: David Copperfield and Esther Sommerson in Bleak House. David, through tears, betrayal, torture given by his closed ones could (at last) come out of the misery and got the job he wanted. Even, he won the love of Agnes, his true soulmate. Esther, abandoned by her mother, could be the best in school, found her lost mother and married the man of her life.

In contrary, Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights (Emily Bronte) became a wealthy person but he misused his fortune for revenge. He ended in misery because he could not move on with his life, locked in the love of his past life, haunted by the ghost of his loved one, Catherine.

2. Money can't buy love. Pip in Great Expectation (Charles Dickens) became a gentleman after an unexpected fortune came into his life. He tried to attract the beautiful but heartless Estella. In fact, after his wealth drained, Pip found Estella again and in his poverty, he could win her love.
